Winnie Mandela Drive — A suspected vehicle hijacker was shot and killed before he could carry out an alleged hijacking attempt along the busy road near Diepsloot in Gauteng Province.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect was intercepted during what authorities believe was an attempted vehicle hijacking along Winnie Mandela Drive, a major route connecting several northern areas of Johannesburg. The suspect was allegedly armed and preparing to target motorists when he was confronted and subsequently neutralized.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing a heavy law-enforcement presence shortly after the incident occurred. Emergency services and police quickly responded to the scene, securing the area while investigators began their preliminary assessment.
Early indications suggest the suspect may have been involved in a planned hijacking operation targeting vehicles traveling along the road. The area surrounding Diepsloot and nearby suburbs has in the past experienced incidents of vehicle hijackings, making the route a known hotspot for such crimes.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspect was acting alone or as part of a larger criminal group. However, investigators are currently examining the possibility that other accomplices may have been involved in the attempted crime.
Police sources say a firearm believed to have been in the possession of the suspect was recovered at the scene. The weapon will undergo ballistic testing as part of the investigation to determine whether it may have been used in previous criminal activities.
Motorists traveling along Winnie Mandela Drive experienced temporary delays as law enforcement officials closed off sections of the road to allow forensic teams to process the scene and collect evidence.
Officials have reiterated that vehicle hijackings remain a serious concern in parts of Gauteng, particularly along busy commuter routes where criminals often target drivers during traffic slowdowns or late-night travel. Law enforcement agencies have recently increased patrols and operations in known hijacking hotspots in an effort to curb the crime.
The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been released, and authorities say further details will be made available once investigations are completed and next of kin have been notified.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant while driving and to report any suspicious activity along major roads and intersections.
